PRP is a treatment for chronic or acute musculoskeletal injuries using a patient’s own blood. After obtaining blood from the patient, it is spun in a centrifuge which separates the blood into its different components. The portion of this sample containing platelet rich plasma is then retrieved and injected directly into the injured tendon or joint. Once injected, growth factors from the platelets are felt to stimulate healing within the damaged tissue.
The procedure generally takes under 1 hour without general anesthesia and is performed in your physician’s office.
Up to 3 injections may be administered in a 90 day period, usually given 3 weeks apart, depending on patients relief of symptoms.
Unlike medications and therapies which focus only on pain relief, PRP has been shown to provide both pain relief and potential healing of damaged musculoskeletal tissue.
Not every musculoskeletal condition may benefit from PRP therapy. A consultation and physical examination with your physician will determine if treatment with PRP injections may be beneficial. Insurance carriers do not currently cover this treatment, although some HSA (health savings accounts) may reimburse you. Our office can assist you in exploring if PRP is right for you.
