In recent years the field of regenerative medicine has been exploding in popularity particularly the use of platelet rich plasma, or PRP. PRP therapy utilizes platelets from one’s own blood to stimulate a healing response in both acute and chronic injuries. Platelets release multiple tissue growth factors in the presence of injury or damage. Using a centrifuge, we extract a high concentration of platelets from the blood and then inject this directly into injured tissues to stimulate the healing process in a natural manner. Platelet rich plasma treatments have a place in athletic injuries as well as in chronic conditions such as tendinitis or some joint problems. Platelet rich plasma has been shown to provide both pain relief and healing of damaged musculoskeletal tissue. It is the stimulation of the natural healing process that separates platelet rich plasma from other treatments such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines and cortisone injections.
The procedure typically requires 15 to 30 minutes of time. A small amount of venous blood is extracted from one of the forearm veins, centrifuged for about 10 minutes, and then injected directly to the injured body part.
The natural tissue healing process typically requires at least six weeks. This is the expected length of time for most patients to experience the pain relief benefit of the procedure; although some patients report resolution of symptoms earlier. More time is typically required for rehabilitation and return to full strength.
Not every injury recovers with platelet rich plasma therapy. Please consult with your physician to determine if this treatment is appropriate for you.
We remind you that most insurances do not cover platelet rich plasma treatments.
