Extracorporeal shock wave treatments or ESWT treatments, are an innovative non-invasive method for treatment of localized musculoskeletal pain. Patients with chronic pain associated with tendinitis or tendinopathy of the shoulder, tennis or golfer’s elbow, tendinitis of the knee, Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis have found this treatment effective in treating symptoms associated with these conditions.
ESWT treatments were designed to administer a wide range of finely tuned low energy shock waves which allows for anesthesia free treatment. Sonorex is the trade name for extracorporeal shock wave treatment. Sonorex is used here in our office for convenient onsite treatment. ESWT Treatment is normally given over three sessions, which entails one treatment a week for three weeks. The effective results of the Sonorex ESWT treatments are a change in the physical, chemical and biological composition of the soft tissue. The treatment consists of initiating a preset number of pulses or shock waves. As the treatment progresses the energy level is graduated to therapeutic levels.
The Sonorex ESWT causes physical changes in the cell membrane of nerves inhibiting the sensation of pain. Shock waves focused by the Sonorex therapy device induce blood supply in the treated area. Our office has utilized this technology since 2004 and has one of the few available units on the west coast.
